All Photographs Shot with the Fujifilm X70

Kevin Mullins is an acclaimed documentary wedding photographer from Newport, Wales. When he’s not photographing weddings he’s out shooting street photography. I recently joined him on one of his popular street photography workshops. Here are a few of the photographs I took during the day we spent walking around the streets of Cardiff.

I borrowed Kevin’s Fuji X70 16 MP compact digital camera, there’s no viewfinder instead a tilt screen and a 28mm wide-angle lens, not to everyones taste but I enjoyed the challenge and with the help of Mr Mullins sharing his techniques, especially zone focusing, I managed to capture some candid moments.

Split Toning

Kevin Mullins shares his Split Toning Technique

At the end of the day we went to the Owain Glyndŵr, Kevin bought the drinks and shared his Lightroom workflow, including his subtle split toning technique. The workshop was a great inspiration, I highly recommend taking his workshop.

I have applied the split toning effect to a few of my images below, IMHO it works best with wedding photography or where the colour white is dominant.

Fujifilm's GFX 50s v the X70

The Fujifilm X70 is a 16.3 MP pocket sized Compact Digital Camera. Compared here for size against the Fuji GFX 50s 51.4 MP medium format mirrorless camera. The GFX 50s also has a tilting LCD display on the rear and an ‘always on’ OLED screen on the top which shows the battery status and shots remaining when the camera is switched off, and various shooting settings when the camera is switched on.

Samsung Gear 360 Camera 2017 Review

Samsung Gear 360 Camera (2017) First Impressions.....

It's just arrived, the new Samsung Gear 360 (2017) camera. I'll keep this blog short; I'm keen to rush out and take 360 degree photos and record in true 4K resolution video.

gear 360 pocketsize
Pocket Sized Samsung Gear 360 (2017)

The Samsung Gear 360 2017 camera has a great new design. It's lightweight (130g) easy to hold and much more practical to carry than the 2016 version which has a larger lens head and a detachable tripod. The 2017 version is smaller, the lens head and handle are built as one, the new design makes it more portable and it will easily fit into the pocket of your jeans so you can take it anywhere.

The handle can also be used as a stand with the help of a rubber ring (stabilisation ring) attached to the hand strap. There's also a standard tripod mount at the bottom of the handle.

The Gear 360 2017 is simple to use; there are three main function buttons, two on the side and a large record button on the front of the device just above the display screen:

  • Connection/Settings button
  • Power/Back button
  • Recording button

The Gear 360 (2017) is now also compatible with iPhone 7, 7+, 6S, 6S+, SE running iOS 10.0 or later which is great news as I use an iPhone. There are functional limitations when using with iOS devices. I currently use the iPhone 6, it's not listed amongst their compatible phones but it connects to the Gear 360 mobile app simply and so far works fine.

Android and iOS devices require a mobile app, and PCs and Macs require the installation of software to work with the new Gear 360. Here is the link for the new PC desktop software Action Director and here are the PC requirements. Here is the link for the Gear 360 2017 Mac desktop software and here are the requirements for the software. The Gear 360 2017 app is free and available from the App store, search for Samsung Gear 360.

gear 360 app for iphoneThe new Gear 360 camera ships with it's very own protective pouch to keep the CMOS, 8.4 MP dual fisheye lenses scratch free. It looks quite cute in it's own mini sleeping bag!

What are the Samsung Gear 360 2017 features?

4K video The dual 8.4MP cameras can shoot video at 24fps in 4096 x 2048.
Live streaming Live streaming footage can be shared live on social platforms including Facebook, YouTube, and Samsung VR as long as the Gear 360 is connected to a compatible smartphone or PC, and it supports streaming in quality up to 2K.
Improved compatibility In addition to the new Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus, the Gear 360 also works with the S7 and S6 phones, along with the 2017 model A5 and A7. It also has iOS support, working with the iPhone 7, 6s, and SE, it also works with my iPhone 6 which is not one of the listed compatible phones. Windows and Mac computers also compatible.
Design The main spherical camera section is noticeably smaller with a built-in easy to grip vertical handle. The Gear 360 2017 has a white-and-grey finish.
Storage The Gear 360 2017 supports microSD cards up to 256GB, no built in storage.
Battery life Included battery is 1,160mAh. Up to 130-minute battery capacity when recording 2560 x 1280 @ 30 frames per second.

And Finally....

Photographs on this page taken with the Fujifilm X-E2.

My goal with the new Gear 360 camera is to capture moments in their entirety and achieve immersive documentary videos. I plan to also include some of the images in my next photo essay, I will post my results soon.

FujiFilm XE2 & Kodalith Film Emulation

I take my Fujifilm X-E2 everywhere, even photo assignments. Though I don't use this particular mid-range X-series model professionally, I tend to stick to my pro level Canon cameras for photo shoots and use the Fujifilm X-E2 for my personal photography.

On a recent assignment, I found myself with some down time while a film screening was underway. The only light came  from a nearby kitchen. I set off to explore, the challenge to make use of the available light while trying not to make any noise and disturb the people enjoying the film. The Fuji X-E2 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera and has a completely silent shutter, perfect for this situation and with the latest firmware, version 4.01 installed make this an excellent camera with great picture quality, combined with the f/1.4 Fuji lens which performs amazingly well in low light.

These images are edited using  Alien Skin Exposure I downloaded the free trial software and used the high contrast Kodalith film simulation with a few tweaks.

Kodalith is an old black and white graphic arts film famous for it's extreme contrast

Impressed with the results, here are a few of my favourites.

Duchess of Cambridge

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge visits the Caerphilly Family Intervention Team (FIT), as royal patron of 'Action For Children'. The service helps children with emotional and behavioural difficulties, problems with family relationships and those who have or are likely to self-harm. ‘Action for Children’ work directly with families to help understand the reasons behind certain behaviour and using creative techniques tailored to meet individual needs.

The Duchess took over the role of royal patron from the Queen in December 2016. After her visit to the children's charity the Duchess made time to say hello and receive flowers from the people and children that had waited outside in rain. Storm Doris was on it's way to the UK, gale force weather conditions were already affecting parts of Wales, the Duchess held her skirt down as she departed clutching flowers from local well wishers.

Women’s March Cardiff

On Saturday 21st January 2017 over 650 women’s marches took place all over the world. In Cardiff hundreds of people from across Wales and beyond stood together in solidarity with the Women’s march on Washington. Here are my photographs from that important day.

Street Photography – Fuji X-E2

Street Photography with the Fuji X-E2

Over the weekend I used the Fujifilm X-E2 mirrorless camera and put my DSLR to one side. Here are a few street photography images taken at a food festival in the Welsh Valleys. I used the Classic Chrome film simulation setting which is now included in the latest  X-E2 camera body firmware version 4.00 update.

Camera Matching Colour Profiles

In the camera's shooting menu I selected image quality FINE+RAW which creates both jpegs and raw files. Note: for Lightroom users the Classic Chrome profile does not appear in the camera calibration list, this is because Adobe does not yet support the X-E2 camera but say they hope to include it in the next update.

                    Fujifilm XE2: f/2.8, 1/4000, ISO 200, Focal Length 27mm

I work as a freelance photographer, I shoot press, pr and live event photography in a candid, documentary style, you can view my work on my website Tracey Paddison Photography.  I use street photography to sharpen my skills as a photographer and it's one of the things I love to do when I'm not taking photographs in my day job.

The Fujifilm X-Series mirrorless cameras are completely silent, making them perfect for street photography.  New on my wishlist the pocket sized Fujifilm X70 with a flip down screen and the same sensor as the X100T, now available to purchase from WEX photographic.
